Day 15 (6 May 2011) - A day in Luang Prabang

We've decided to spend an extra night in Luang Prabang since this city is so rich in heritage.
It is the capital of Luang Prabang Province. The current population of the city is about 103,000.
Until the communist takeover in 1975, it was the royal capital and seat of government of the Kingdom of Laos.

The hotel we stayed in - The View Pavillion. It is situated a stone throws away from the Mekong River. Rooms are large and very very well furnished. It even has a hot tub! theres also a large balcony, and ample bike parking just outside our rooms. USD 40 a night. Highly recommended by the Bochapoldmen.

A view of our room in View Pavillion.

Our hot tub.

Old man's dream car..

The 3 Nagas hotel - a very beautiful hotel situated beside the river. If not for the lack of parking, we'd have stayed here.

A primary school in Luang Prabang.

This temple is called Wat Pa Houak. It was built in 1860.

Some ancient murals on the wall of this temple.

A library in Luang Prabang. This library has a "donate a book drive". This is how it goes. We buy books from this library and drop these books in the book bag. Once the book bag is filled with 100 books, staff from the library distribute them to the villages and towns in the outskirts of Laos. Their aim is to promote literacy in the rural areas of the country.
Donating some books.

Oldman and the founder of this programme.

Policemen on duty. They'll catch u if u do not wear a helmet while riding in the day. However at night when they've gone to sleep, every one rides around without helmets.

We had Lao coffee here. Lao coffee is very thick and fragrant. The Lao people like their coffee really really sweet.
